elbow update

Darren Cahill on Sinner's elbow, via @Tennis_Now: "He dropped about 6 mph on forehand. We did go out to the indoor courts and just fed balls [to him] for 20-30 minutes, just to feel the ball. He's going to be okay, it was just nice to get on the court -- it's impossible for him to take a day off."

on his condition:

“I’m not anywhere near 100 per cent -- but I’m still fighting my arse off every point.” On belief before facing Fritz: “It’s a pathetic outlook if I go out there thinking I can’t win. I won last time on grass, but very different grass, in different circumstances. So, you know, it’ll be a new day.” On his physical turnaround: “When I was warming up for the doubles yesterday, I was seriously questioning what I was doing out there, but I actually felt better as the day went on. And today was actually a lot better. Don’t know why, but felt half-normal on the court. But to make my first Wimbledon fourth-round under the circumstances at the moment is incredible.”

on his physical condition:

"Regarding my body, my knee bothered me the first day, I had been dealing with tendinitis, but now it seems to have improved, almost gone completely. I feel better now than at the beginning of the tournament, although I'm sure I'll be a bit sore tomorrow. Despite winning in four sets, this match was much more physical than the previous ones, I ran a lot from side to side."

medical time-out (cramps)

Fucsovics eventually managed to put Gael Monfils away, sealing the win in today’s one-set shootout carried over from yesterday (3:43 hr total). The Hungarian scored six points fewer overall but played bold, aggressive tennis when it mattered most to outlast the 38-year-old Frenchman in the end. Both players were struggling physically last night—Fucsovics showed signs of cramping in his right thigh, while Monfils frequently dropped to his haunches between points. Monfils failed to serve out the match in the fourth set before play was suspended, and couldn’t recover the momentum today. Commentary: "Untidy at times, with 10 double faults, but on resumption today, Fucs found the decisive break." Fucsovics 46w 77ue; Monfils 36w 54ue. Fucsovics 6/4 1/6 4/6 7/6 6/4.

medical time-out (medication)

Sonego returned well and played with too much baseline consistency in a four-set win over Basilashvili. Sonego took an MTO before the 4th set tiebreak to receive medication but didn’t look bothered in the tiebreak. Sonego dominated the first two sets before Basilashvili raised his level and played a brilliant third set tiebreak. Sonego withstood the big hitting from Basilashvili in the fourth set and edged out the tiebreak to avoid a 5th set that would’ve likely been played tomorrow. Basilashvili was spraying poor errors all over the place in the first two sets but gradually found his controlled aggression and made Sonego work for the victory. Commentary: “Good save from Sonego as I'm not sure they had enough time to play the 5th set. He served for the match at 6-5 in the 4th, missed 2 MPs (one of them a very entertaining rally, Basilashvili's last volley clipping the tape and going in) before managing to clinch it in the tie-break.” Sonego 30w 17ue; Basilashvili 41w 58ue. Sonego 6/1 6/3 6/7 7/6.

on the state of his hips:

"They’re moving, but it’s one day at a time. I’ve had to change quite a few things around my preparation, but at the moment I'm happy I can build up a few more matches and get some more court time. Right now, I’m feeling good—just a little low on energy—but I’ve got a day off tomorrow, which really helps me."

medical time-out (ankle)

Davidovich Fokina returned well and played with too much baseline firepower in a four-set win over van de Zandschulp. Davidovich Fokina took an MTO yesterday due to a brief ankle issue but didn’t appear physically bothered today. After the match was suspended at 5-5 in the fourth set yesterday, both players held to love before Davidovich Fokina twice came back from a mini break down in the tiebreak. Davidovich Fokina struggled for consistency a bit in the second set but played with great controlled aggression for much of the match. van de Zandschulp struggled to hit through the consistency of Davidovich Fokina for much of the match and converted just 3/11 break points. Davidovich Fokina converted 6/15 break points and won 66% of second serve return points in a poised display. Commentary: “Davidovich Fokina gets the job done in quick fashion today after an impressive display of hitting.” Davidovich Fokina 46w 36ue; van de Zandschulp 27w 49ue. Davidovich Fokina 6/1 4/6 6/3 7/6.

medical time-out (right wrist)

Ofner overcame a brutal first set and took advantage of an injured T. Paul in a four-set upset win. Ofner took an MTO after the first set for his right wrist and looked fine physically after the MTO. T. Paul took an MTO late in the second set after pulling a muscle in his left foot/ankle and was clearly physically limited for the rest of the match. Ofner broke late in the last 3 sets and then saved all 4 break points faced in the fourth set to record the biggest win of his career. T. Paul gritted through the injury but was unable to stay consistent enough as the match went on and Ofner made him pay. Commentary: “Ofner back in Wimbledon R3 for first time since his breakthrough run in 2017. I keep saying it but before the heel issues last year (had surgery on both feet), he looked like he wouldn't last in the Top 100. Now he's back and better than ever, biggest win of career vs #13 Paul.” Ofner 37w 49ue; T. Paul 23w 42ue. Ofner 1/6 7/5 6/4 7/5.

medical time-out (right foot)

Mannarino saw off qualifier Valentin Royer in four competitive sets (3:23 hr). The 37-year-old Frenchman served efficiently, winning 87% of points behind his first delivery and hitting 18 aces. In the rallies, he was the more experienced and composed player, using his court craft to draw errors from his compatriot. A light breeze made for slightly scrappy exchanges at times, but Royer held his own well and pushed the match to a fourth-set tiebreak. Mannarino took a MTO for a right foot issue at *3-4 in the fourth but seemed largely unaffected afterwards, closing out the match with a tidy tiebreak. Commentary: "Strains of best-of-five play were getting to Mannarino with treatment on his right foot, but he played a controlled TB to finish off Royer. He's now 10-4 on grass this year after going 7-21 on clay." Mannarino 15w 8ue; Royer 15w 14ue. Mannarino 6/4 6/4 5/7 7/6.
