"I think I won't play in Toronto..."

Darderi on injury fears before the final: "Yes, I didn't expect it. I haven't said anything so far, but this morning when I got up I was having trouble walking: I had a lot of pain under my foot. So at a certain point, at breakfast, I told my coach that I wouldn't be able to go on court. Because my foot hurt so much that I had trouble going to the bathroom and going down to have breakfast. Then, as the day went on, my foot got better. But it was really a difficult moment. That's why I was also very nervous in the first games, because I didn't know how I would be able to stay on court. I didn't expect to be able to win today: I'm very happy, I managed to play 100%, luckily. In the last game I twisted my ankle a little, which had already been a little weak since this morning due to the pain in my foot, so much so that I was all bandaged up, but luckily I managed to finish the match. So I think I won't play in Toronto: I don't know, I still have to decide with my team. But luckily I managed to win and that's the important thing. Now there will be time to recover."

plays his first match since January

Shang on his foot injury and return to action for the first time since the Australian Open: "Sometimes I woke up in the middle of the night and it started hurting and I had to walk around a little bit to circulate it. It was not the nicest moment. In Australia, I was struggling with it pretty bad. We thought it was a bone bruise or something like that, that it was not so serious. But after a month, maybe, it was still hurting the same. Sometimes it would hurt more and I would have resting pain when I slept, so I was like, ‘Wow, this is possibly going in that direction’. The pain went away other than the cuts with the scalpel. Obviously with the medication at the beginning, it helped a lot. But after, when I was rehabbing, it was hurting a little bit here and there. When you walked, you were always kind of scared that something might break, because it doesn’t feel like it's yours. Overall it's been really good. I'm glad I had a good time at home, spending time with my family, and my physio Charlie is great. He's done a huge role in this rehab."

medical time-out (left thigh)

Moutet staved off late cramps to take out Daniil Medvedev in a brutal three-setter in Washington (2:25 hr). The Frenchman used all his craft—mixing spins, throwing in underarm serves, and dragging Medvedev forward—to keep the rallies unpredictable and exploit the Russian’s deep return position. Medvedev looked frustrated and physically off for much of the match, calling the physio to check his vitals at 2-4 in the second set. Moutet later needed treatment himself for thigh cramp at 3-2* in the decider but kept finding ways to disrupt rhythm. After a weather delay at 4-5 in the third, despite battling cramps, the Frenchman broke for the match as Medvedev served up three of his 10 double-faults in the final game. Commentary: "It turned into an endurance battle. You've got to wonder how much he will have left for tomorrow." Moutet 22w 29ue; Medvedev 34w 43ue. Moutet 1/6 6/4 6/4.

medical time-court (chat with doctor)

Prizmic recovered from a slow start to beat Nikoloz Basilashvili quite comfortably in the end (1:53 hr). The 19-year-old wildcard was overpowered in the opening set but gradually grew into the match and was playing some excellent stuff by the close. He did a particularly good job hitting down the lines in sets two and three, getting Basilashvili on the move. Unable to set himself as cleanly as he could early on, the Georgian began to spray the ball off both wings. Prizmic had the doctor out at the end of the first but didn’t appear to be hindered. Commentary: "Having a more defensive playstyle can be a death sentence vs Basilashvili—he can keep cracking full-power shots off both wings with no end in sight when he's in rhythm. But Prizmic stuck to it and finally started getting the cracks he wanted." Prizmic 28w 20ue; Basilashvili 27w 38ue. Prizmic 2/6 6/3 6/2.

medical time-out (blister)

Shelton dropped just 7 points on serve and played with too much controlled aggression in a straight set win over McDonald. Shelton took an MTO early in the second set to receive treatment for a left pinky injury/blister but didn’t look physically bothered after. Shelton broke midway through each set and won 85% of overall service points in a comfortable win to start his tournament. McDonald won just 29% of second serve points and really struggled to handle the big Shelton serve (10 aces). Commentary: “Ben Shelton loves these Washington courts (2024 SFst) and showed it today in an extremely tidy performance.” Shelton 23w 15ue; McDonald 12w 23ue. Shelton 6/3 6/4.

medical time-out (right arm)

Ugo Carabelli rallied from a break down in the third set to beat Francesco Passaro in Umag, grinding out a hard-earned win in 2:32 hr. The Argentine looked close to retirement after dropping the opening set—battling a right arm issue, clearly fatigued, and repeatedly crouching between points. But Passaro lost intensity at the start of the second and allowed Ugo Carabelli to hit his way back into the match. Despite taking the lead again in the third set, the Italian couldn’t hold his nerve, dropping the final four games with a series of poor errors. Commentary: "Quick turnaround for Ugo Carabelli who seemed to be struggling with a few things. He looked physically depleted, but did well to turn it around. He was signalling to his team that he was done and didn’t look like he’d continue, but he looked a different player in the second set." Ugo Carabelli 27w 27ue; Passaro 37w 46ue. Ugo Carabelli 6/7 6/2 6/3. --- Ugo Carabelli after beating Passaro: "I was so tired after playing Saturday in Bastad. It’s so hot here, but I’m so happy I could win. I have a free day tomorrow, so I can rest."

medical time-out (left knee)

van de Zandschulp saw off an injury concern and rallied from a break down in set three to dispatch Nicolas Jarry. The Dutchman showed the more confident and controlled play initially before Jarry started to find his rhythm, and after an early break in set three it seemed like the momentum was with the Chilean. However, van de Zandschulp dug in, got some returns into play and Jarry conceded his advantage. Jarry didn’t recover from his lapse, quickly conceding a further break and with it the match. Injury News: van de Zandschulp required physio treatment on his left knee after the first game in set three. Commentary: “Jarry made a mess of that, so many errors in the end of this match from him. Botic hung around and the dip happened.” van de Zandschulp 13w 29ue; Jarry 29w 48ue. van de Zandschulp 6/4 4/6 6/3.

medical time-out (right knee/thigh)

Misolic continued his strong summer form with a three-set win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry in Kitzbuhel, sealing the match in just under three hours despite a second-set setback (2:42 hr). The Austrian was far more aggressive throughout, finishing with 34 winners—21 from the forehand wing alone—and moved well despite taking an MTO at *3-4 in the third for the same right knee/thigh issue that had troubled him in Bastad. Etcheverry edged the second set but was second best for most of the contest. Commentary: "A really enjoyable match. High quality from both players. He played really well. The slice became more and more of a factor and he began to have some joy with it." Misolic 34w 43ue; Etcheverry 19w 37ue. Misolic 7/5 5/7 6/3. --- Misolic after beating Etcheverry: "It’s amazing to play here on the centre court. I have great memories from here. I played my first ATP match here, and then there was the final. I’m hoping to make the final again."

injury update

Nishioka after beating Brooksby: "That was a first win since Delray Beach in February. It's been 5 months since I couldn't play tennis as I expected due to a lot of injuries, but I think I'm getting back in good shape. The ranking has dropped quite a bit, but I think I can get into the top again without any problems, so I'll do my best to fight without injuries. I'll do my best to achieve good results in my favorite American season."
