Medjedovic played with too much baseline consistency and came back from a break down in the second set in a straight sets win over Rinderknech. Medjedovic took an MTO before the second set tiebreak due to illness but didn’t appear too affected after. Medjedovic broke immediately in the first set and didn’t face a break point en route to a comfortable opener. Rinderknech found his rally tolerance in the second set and fought off 4 match points, but a few loose errors in the tiebreak doomed him against the more solid Medjedovic. The young Serbian struggled on his second serve in the second set (6 double faults) but found his game late in the tiebreak. Commentary: “Medjedovic continues his strong run of form and knocks off the erratic Rinderknech in Winston-Salem. McDonald played with too much baseline firepower and overcame a significant leg injury to somehow defeat Holt in a wild, three-set win. McDonald took multiple MTO’s in the third set due to a right leg/knee injury and was barely moving during the third set. McDonald led by a set and a break but struggled to end the second and was dominated in the tiebreak. Despite struggling to move, McDonald somehow went unbroken on serve in the decider and went for broke in the tiebreak which proved to be successful. McDonald hit an incredible 35 forehand winners and found a way to win despite hitting over twice as many unforced errors as the more solid Holt. Commentary: “Mackie McDonald just won a tennis match one legged for an hour, crazy scenes. Holt was brutal in the third set as this was a match he easily should’ve won.” McDonald 58w 66ue; Holt 27w 25ue. McDonald 6/4 6/7 7/6.

Pigossi took an MTO for a left groin/thigh issue at 5-7 7-6 4-3 before going on to win 5/7 7/6 6/3 against T. Zidansek in qualifying at the US Open today. Zidansek also had the physio out at the same time for what looked like a similar issue.

Zakharova came from a set and a break down to defeat Kimberly Birrell in three sets for the second time in 18 months. The match lasted 3h 8m and Zakharova took a MTO at the end of the second set to have her vital signs checked after finding it tough to deal with the heat and humidity. Despite those issues, the Ukrainian showed a great fighting spirit and was able to take advantage of Birrell's second serve, particularly in the decider. In all there were 14 breaks of serve between them with Zakharova having to work hard for so many of her points after putting in just 44% of first serves. Commentary: "It was a battle, over three hours. Frustration for Birrell. Zakharova showed good character to come from behind." Zakharova 5/7 6/4 6/3.
