returns from ankle ligament tear (07/29)

Andreescu returns to action in Beijing next week after being forced to withdraw from Montreal with a left ankle ligament tear last time out (July 29th). She skipped Cincinnati, US Open and Guadalajara. Sunday, March 9, 2025 Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - Andreescu on how the injury happened: "It was unexpected. It just happened. I mean, we work every day. We do exercises for our feet, ankles. Yes, we really can't explain it. Maybe it was the emotions. Maybe I was a little tired. I just stepped in a strange way. Yes, we can only say it was an unfortunate accident. That's all we can say." On trying to stay positive: "I try to maintain a positive attitude. Obviously, as I've been through this many times, I tend to think of the worst-case scenario. But I like to try to keep an open mind about these things, and then once they examine me and do the tests, which I couldn't do until the next day. Obviously, I wanted to see today how I felt to make a decision, and I feel better than yesterday, but not enough to play."

medical time-out (right shoulder)

Yibing Wu rallied from a set and a break down to beat Daniil Medvedev in just over three hours (3:11 hr). The Chinese wildcard struggled with the match-up at times, with the Russian repeatedly forcing him to play one extra ball, but he kept going for his shots and was rewarded for staying in the fight. Yibing Wu took an MTO for a right shoulder issue midway through the second set and looked finished, but Medvedev faltered when serving for the match. The #2 seed hadn’t faced a break point until then but threw in three of his seven double faults and was broken. He also squandered a *5–4 lead in the second set tiebreak after rallying from 0–4 down. From there, Wu continued with his bold baseline hitting and powered through to complete a remarkable turnaround. Medvedev had an MTO of his own for a right elbow complaint a game before the end. Commentary: "A stunning comeback. A herculean effort to turn it around. What an exhibition of power hitting." Yibing Wu 25w 48ue; Medvedev 28w 43ue. Yibing Wu 5/7 7/6 6/4.

medical time-out (right elbow)

Shevchenko required three sets to see off the resurgent T. Daniel in Chengdu (2:15 hr). The Kazakh served really well for much of the contest and was more assertive in his shot selection, but a 45-minute rain delay early in the second set disrupted his rhythm and allowed the Japanese qualifier to grind his way back into the match. Daniel, who had been rock solid to that point, began to tire in the decider, and Shevchenko seized control with heavier hitting and greater energy despite playing his third three-set match of the week. Shevchenko had the physio out for a right elbow complaint at the end of the opening set. Commentary: "A good match full of quality. A strong performance against an in-form, confident Daniel, whose ranking should move up if he can keep playing like that. Both served well, and the backhand down the line was a big weapon for Shevchenko." Shevchenko 41w 30ue; T. Daniel 23w 23ue. Shevchenko 7/6 3/6 6/2.

Corentin Moutet

Questionable

was on court for 3:47 hr today

Moutet edged past compatriot Arthur Cazaux in a near four-hour battle in Hangzhou (3:47). The #4 seed saved a couple of match points late in the third set before playing a solid tiebreak to seal the win. He absorbed Cazaux’s bigger serve and consistently extended rallies, turning the contest into a dogfight. Most importantly, he was clutch on the big points, saving 10/12 break points faced. Cazaux had chances throughout but his first-serve percentage dropped as the match wore on, leaving him vulnerable to Moutet's greater variety of play in the longer exchanges. Commentary: "Cazaux just couldn’t maintain his early serving level, which meant Moutet was able to play more of the match on his own terms." Flashscore stats: Moutet 14w 10ue; Cazaux 14w 9ue. Moutet 6/7 6/3 7/6.
