The spring transfer portal window opened April 16 and remains open until April 30. Spring practices for many college football teams have recently ended, with almost every team set to finish by the end of April. The college football offseason news cycle is in full swing, and we’re rounding up the most notable player updates, emphasizing significant injury updates and transfers.
Here you’ll also find quarterback updates from the 80-plus spring games over the last two weeks, with a focus on which QBs started or got snaps and their stats as available. While many teams have not officially named their QB starters, the order in which QBs play in spring games is often very indicative of the depth chart.
As a reminder, the focus here is on quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends. The updates in today’s edition range from mid-April through late April.
Something to remember when seeing QB stats listed for spring games – many stats are unofficial or may be incomplete (rushing stats are usually not included). Some returning starters play very few snaps or drives; some teams tackle while others play to “thud.”
Many, if not most, QBs are non-contact in these games.
Spring games can also run different lengths, depending on the team. They may only play one half, or may use a running clock. Stats could also include situational drills.
While many notable updates are shared here, to see a more full listing of updates, to see more details on the updates shared here, or to search for a specific player, check out the Unabated CFB News Feed.
Major College Football Player Updates
Arizona State may have been the team with the most significant losses to the spring transfer portal at the skill positions, as both QB Jaden Rashada and WR Elijhah Badger entered the portal. Rashada only played in three games last season due to injury after beginning the season as the starter, but he passed for 485 yards and four touchdowns in those games and was the likely starter for 2024 prior to transferring.
He later announced he will transfer to Georgia where he’ll serve as a backup to Carson Beck. Badger was the team’s leading receiver in 2023, catching 65 passes for 713 yards and three TDs, with no other WR having more than 226 yards.
Arizona State also lost TE Bryce Pierre to the portal, who had 17 catches for 139 yards in 2023, their leading returning TE, but they did add Colorado TE Chamon Metayer from the portal, who had previously transferred to Colorado from Cincinnati this offseason (23 catches for 258 yards and 5 TDs in 2023).
Utah State saw significant movement in its QB room as spring practice came to a close. Coach Blake Anderson announced that Iowa transfer Spencer Petras had been named the starter, which appeared to lead last season’s top two QBs, Cooper Legas and McCae Hillstead, to enter the transfer portal.
In 2023 Legas passed for 1,815 yards and 19 TDs, while Hillstead threw for 1,062 yards and 11 TDs (and since entering the portal has committed to transfer to BYU). Petras was at Iowa from 2018-2022, passing for 5,199 yards and 24 TDs for his career before sitting out the 2023 season after shoulder surgery. Utah transfer Bryson Barnes is expected to be the backup for Utah State.
Arizona WR Tetairoa McMillan left practice on April 20th with a reported leg/lower body injury, then on April 23rd he was seen at practice wearing a walking boot on his left foot and using a scooter to get around, his spring appearing to be done. New Arizona coach Brent Brennan announced that McMillan had undergone a small procedure but is expected to be back at full strength for the 2024 season. In 2023 McMillan recorded 90 receptions for 1,402 yards and 10 TDs, which ranked him fifth in the nation in receiving yards and tied for ninth in the nation in receptions.
Former Penn State WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith, who was considered one of the top wide receivers in the portal, committed to transfer to Auburn. He played four seasons at Penn State, totaling 126 catches for 1,721 yards and 11 TDs, with his best season coming in 2023 when he had 53 receptions for 673 yards and four TDs.
The running back position saw the most high-profile portal entries and commitments of the skill positions as the spring period opened – former UMass RB Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams is transferring to Michigan State, former Miami Ohio RB Rashad Amos initially announced a commitment to Mississippi State, but he has since decommitted and re-opened his options, and former New Mexico RB Jacorey Croskey-Merritt flipped his transfer commitment from Arizona to Ole Miss.
Also, former Ohio State RB Dallan Hayden committed to Colorado, but Colorado saw Dylan Edwards, Alton McCaskill and Sy’veon Wilkerson all enter the portal.
Former Toledo RB Peny Boone re-entered the portal after spending the spring practicing with Louisville, and former Miami RB Henry Parrish is transferring back to Ole Miss where he began his career. Other notable RBs to enter the portal included Utah State’s Davon Booth and Rahsul Faison, Michigan State’s Jalen Berger and Memphis’ Jay Ducker.
