Zakharova came from a set and a break down to defeat Kimberly Birrell in three sets for the second time in 18 months. The match lasted 3h 8m and Zakharova took a MTO at the end of the second set to have her vital signs checked after finding it tough to deal with the heat and humidity. Despite those issues, the Ukrainian showed a great fighting spirit and was able to take advantage of Birrell's second serve, particularly in the decider. In all there were 14 breaks of serve between them with Zakharova having to work hard for so many of her points after putting in just 44% of first serves.
