Bronzetti saved a match point before edging past Lin Zhu in a gruelling three-and-a-half-hour battle (3:27 hr). The Italian landed fewer than half of her first serves but protected her second ball more effectively and was able to wear Zhu down in the end. Zhu, who took an MTO at 1-4 in the second set to get her vital signs checked, fought valiantly throughout but couldn’t close it out, with her serve faltering when it mattered most. Bronzetti took a heavy fall at 0-2 in the third-set tiebreak, landing on her right wrist, but dusted herself off and battled over the line.
