"I think I won't play in Toronto..."

Darderi on injury fears before the final: "Yes, I didn't expect it. I haven't said anything so far, but this morning when I got up I was having trouble walking: I had a lot of pain under my foot. So at a certain point, at breakfast, I told my coach that I wouldn't be able to go on court. Because my foot hurt so much that I had trouble going to the bathroom and going down to have breakfast. Then, as the day went on, my foot got better. But it was really a difficult moment. That's why I was also very nervous in the first games, because I didn't know how I would be able to stay on court. I didn't expect to be able to win today: I'm very happy, I managed to play 100%, luckily. In the last game I twisted my ankle a little, which had already been a little weak since this morning due to the pain in my foot, so much so that I was all bandaged up, but luckily I managed to finish the match. So I think I won't play in Toronto: I don't know, I still have to decide with my team. But luckily I managed to win and that's the important thing. Now there will be time to recover."

Shang on his foot injury and return to action for the first time since the Australian Open: "Sometimes I woke up in the middle of the night and it started hurting and I had to walk around a little bit to circulate it. It was not the nicest moment. In Australia, I was struggling with it pretty bad. We thought it was a bone bruise or something like that, that it was not so serious. But after a month, maybe, it was still hurting the same. Sometimes it would hurt more and I would have resting pain when I slept, so I was like, ‘Wow, this is possibly going in that direction’. The pain went away other than the cuts with the scalpel. Obviously with the medication at the beginning, it helped a lot. But after, when I was rehabbing, it was hurting a little bit here and there. When you walked, you were always kind of scared that something might break, because it doesn’t feel like it's yours. Overall it's been really good. I'm glad I had a good time at home, spending time with my family, and my physio Charlie is great. He's done a huge role in this rehab."
