medical time-out (right arm)
Ugo Carabelli rallied from a break down in the third set to beat Francesco Passaro in Umag, grinding out a hard-earned win in 2:32 hr. The Argentine looked close to retirement after dropping the opening set—battling a right arm issue, clearly fatigued, and repeatedly crouching between points. But Passaro lost intensity at the start of the second and allowed Ugo Carabelli to hit his way back into the match. Despite taking the lead again in the third set, the Italian couldn’t hold his nerve, dropping the final four games with a series of poor errors. Commentary: "Quick turnaround for Ugo Carabelli who seemed to be struggling with a few things. He looked physically depleted, but did well to turn it around. He was signalling to his team that he was done and didn’t look like he’d continue, but he looked a different player in the second set." Ugo Carabelli 27w 27ue; Passaro 37w 46ue. Ugo Carabelli 6/7 6/2 6/3. --- Ugo Carabelli
after beating Passaro: "I was so tired after playing Saturday in Bastad. It’s so hot here, but I’m so happy I could win. I have a free day tomorrow, so I can rest."
