medical time-out (left knee)

Cobolli edged past wildcard Alexis Galarneau in three tight sets in Toronto (2:27 hr). The Italian wasn’t at his best but raised his level when it mattered and had just enough firepower to get over the line. Galarneau competed well, chased everything down, and finished just two points short overall, but ultimately couldn’t match Cobolli’s weight of shot in key moments. Cobolli took an MTO at the end of the second set for a left knee issue, which had been strapped from the start. Commentary: "Cobolli’s movement did seem a little labored at times today." Cobolli 25w 46ue; Galarneau 22w 47ue. Cobolli 6/4 5/7 7/5.

Arthur Fils

Returning

plays first match since FO (lower back)

Fils on returning after injury: "I'm feeling great. It's been a while since I've seen my tour friends, so now I'm happy to be back. Of course, many things have changed in two months. I was fit, playing quite well. Now I'm back, still fit, but not playing well. But it's very nice to be back, and I'm enjoying it." On picking up a racket again: "When I stepped on the court, I was excited. Five minutes in, I was already frustrated. But it's nice to be playing again. I've been playing for ten days. I feel the level improving day by day. So, I'm quite happy." On expectations in Toronto: "I just want to get back to competing and stepping on the court. People cheering my name and me trying to play my best tennis or, at the very least, enjoy my time on the court."
