Ben Shelton

Withdrawal

withdrew from the doubles (fatigue)

Shelton on how he feels physically: “I feel good. A few muscle things but nothing structurally wrong. Aches and pains are normal especially on the hard court swing. The legs take a lot of force and I think I did a good job in the few days I had to recover. Hopefully I’ll be even better for round 3.” Diallo and Shelton have withdrawn from the doubles in Cincinnati with one of them citing fatigue. Both are still in the singles.

medical time-out (shoulder)

Gracheva on beating Kenin after losing to her at Roland Garros: "Yes, you definitely think about it. I didn't think I was in a position to beat her, but it feels even better. Yes, this rematch feels good." On confidence from back-to-back three-set wins: "I try to hold on. It's not easy. I try to find a good balance. After a three-set match, the next day I don't do much, I try to stay cool. But I feel pretty good. There's a small injury to my shoulder. It's an annoying thing that can prevent me from playing well or serving. But we're doing what we need to do to keep it going. The physio is working well."

on his back:

"Before Toronto, it was complicated. I hurt my back and it was impossible for me to go on a court. I couldn't do anything for a week. I arrived in Cincinnati and I only played an hour a day. It wasn't until Friday that I played an hour and a half. So, I didn't really know how it was going to hold up. I tried to be super relaxed and play super relaxed. I didn't want to block myself out. Plus, it was hot. I told myself to be calm, to serve well. If it comes back, to try to give it a go. But with this heat, the surface is quite fast and it was okay. There was a small alert on the last game, but I was able to manage. More than victory or defeat, the most important thing was the back and I'm happy that it held up. Now, we have to continue to take good care of it and manage everything well." On how the injury happened: "Stupidly. I was tense, a little tired. It happened during a physical session during training."

medical time-out (neck)

Kalinskaya won the last five games, outlasting Stearns in a two-and-a-half hour contest of three sets in which both players were troubled by physical issues. Kalinskaya offset her 7 aces with 9 double faults. She came back from 2–5, saving a set point to take the first set, then took an MTO for a neck problem at 3–4 in the second, appearing to gesture that it was causing pain to shoot down her right arm, which probably contributed to some unfortunate flurries of forehand errors. But she seemed to respond well to either the treatment or the medication or both, and was the crisper and more energetic ball-striker in the decider. Stearns attacked well enough to take advantage of the Russian’s woes in the second set but took an MTO for a right shoulder problem at 1–4 in the third, where she leaked too many cheap errors and was outgunned off the ground, winning only 55% of points behind her first serve. Commentary: “Peyton ran out of gas physically at the end. It was highly competitive for 2 sets but Anna rolled through the 3rd.” Kalinskaya 7/6 4/6 6/1.
