Arthur Fils

Returning

plays first match since FO (lower back)

Fils on returning after injury: "I'm feeling great. It's been a while since I've seen my tour friends, so now I'm happy to be back. Of course, many things have changed in two months. I was fit, playing quite well. Now I'm back, still fit, but not playing well. But it's very nice to be back, and I'm enjoying it." On picking up a racket again: "When I stepped on the court, I was excited. Five minutes in, I was already frustrated. But it's nice to be playing again. I've been playing for ten days. I feel the level improving day by day. So, I'm quite happy." On expectations in Toronto: "I just want to get back to competing and stepping on the court. People cheering my name and me trying to play my best tennis or, at the very least, enjoy my time on the court."

medical time-out (knee)

Kalinskaya was badly derailed by pain in her left knee during the second set but pushed through it and got her feet moving better again in the third to beat a shaky-serving Ann Li in 2h13m. Kalinskaya got off to a fairly good start in a serve-dominated first set, although she wavered in the tiebreak, losing 6 straight points from 4–0 up before regrouping to win the last 4 points. Perhaps the tiebreak was when she first tweaked her knee. She took an MTO at 0–3 in the second, getting her knee heavily taped up, and her movement was very gingerly throughout the second set, resulting in heaps of off-balance or mistimed errors. She received medication at 0–4, had a conversation with the physio at 0–5, and then removed all the tape before the third set, where she double-faulted on break point to go down 0–2. From there on, though, she gradually regained confidence in her movement, cut down the errors, and became more creative tactically, making the American deal with awkward low balls and dipping passing shots. Li didn’t play badly in rallies most of the way but landed only 52% of her first serves, was outhit from the back of the court when Kalinskaya was on her game, and faltered under pressure at the end. Commentary: “Kalinskaya’s knee is clearly an issue. I think drugs got her through.” Kalinskaya 7/6 0/6 6/3.

medical time-out (foot)

Yastremska recovered from a slow start to take out Camila Osorio in three sets (2:22 hr). It was a messy match, featuring 11 breaks of serve and 15 double faults, but the Ukrainian improved as the match progressed and found a way through in the end. Yastremska, who arrived late due to visa issues, had the physio out to patch up her right foot early in the third set but finished strongly. Osorio was just two points away from victory in the second-set tiebreak but couldn’t close, and faded in the decider. Commentary: "Yastremska made lots of errors in the first set but found a better rhythm after that." Yastremska 37w 70ue; Osorio 11w 42ue. Yastremska 3/6 7/6 6/2.
